Hymn to the Divinity of Dreams
1. |
THEE I invoke, blest pow'r of dreams divine,
2. |
Angel of future fates, swift wings are thine:
3. |
Great source of oracles to human kind,
4. |
When stealing soft, and whisp'ring to the mind,
5. |
Thro' sleep's sweet silence and the gloom of night,
6. |
Thy pow'r awakes th' intellectual fight;
7. |
To silent souls the will of heav'n relates,
8. |
And silently reveals their future fates.
9. |
For ever friendly to the upright mind
10. |
Sacred and pure, to holy rites inclin'd;
11. |
For these with pleasing hope thy dreams inspire,
12. |
Bliss to anticipate, which all desire.
13. |
Thy visions manifest of fate disclose,
14. |
What methods best may mitigate our woes;
15. |
Reveal what rites the Gods immortal please,
16. |
And what the means their anger to appease:
17. |
For ever tranquil is the good man's end,
18. |
Whose life, thy dreams admonish and defend.
19. |
But from the wicked turn'd averse to bless,
20. |
Thy form unseen, the angel of distress;
21. |
No means to cheek approaching ill they find,
22. |
Pensive with fears, and to the future blind.
23. |
Come, blessed pow'r, the signatures reveal
24. |
Which heav'n's decrees mysteriously conceal,
25. |
Signs only present to the worthy mind,
26. |
Nor omens ill disclose of monst'rous kind.
