Chapter 6 |
| |
Sappho - Hymn to Aphrodite |
| |
615 BCE |
1. |
Daughter of Zeus, |
2. |
Immortal Aphrodite, |
3. |
Queen of the broidered throne,
4. |
distress'd I pray thee,
5. |
Weaver of wiles,
6. |
break not my heart with anguish,
7. |
O Goddess, hear me!
8. |
Now hither come, as once before thou camest,
9. |
Hearing my voice afar, and lean to listen;
10. |
Camest with golden chariot, leaving swiftly
11. |
Thy father's dwelling.
12. |
Beautiful, fleet thy sparrows drew thee hither,
13. |
Round the dark earth
14. |
from heaven's height descending,
15. |
Whirled they with wings
16. |
through deeps of middle aether,
17. |
Fluttering came they.
18. |
Then thou, blest once, with lips immortal smiling,
19. |
Didst ask -
20. |
"Why weepest thou? What is befallen?
21. |
Whom wouldst thy heart and beauty
22. |
draw to love thee?
23. |
Who wrongs thee, Sappho?
24. |
"She who spurns gifts shall give;
25. |
who flies shall follow;
26. |
If she loves not, unwilling soon shall love thee."
27. |
Ah, come, from care release, fulfil my yearning;
28. |
Help, I beseech thee.
29. |
Daughter of Zeus,
30. |
Immortal Aphrodite,
31. |
Queen of the broidered throne,
32. |
distress'd I pray thee,
33. |
Weaver of wiles,
34. |
break not my heart with anguish,
35. |
O Goddess, hear me!
